The winter months can be a time for many to get sad, especially a gardener, but I have found it is sometimes my favorite season to grow in. I don't have to worry about the heat, and most of the time, bugs. A lot of wonderful crops like the cold and sometimes you have to plant some items such as garlic and tulips for the spring during the winter months.
This year is no different as I am planning to start preparing what I want to put in the ground. Sometimes I have planted them sooner, however this year it is just working out that December will be my month to start. I plan on growing garlic, tulips, cabbages, broccoli, radishes, beets, carrots and many other items during this winter.
During this time I am also trying to switch my in ground garden to raised beds to make it easier on myself. I think it will make it easier to work on with my bad knee versus the ground. We are also looking at adding a good amount of nutrients into the ground as it has been a bit since I have truly done that. To help with this I am adding crushed egg shells and lots of compost.
We hope this will make next spring even easier as we will be going to a no till method with the raised beds. We have tilled many times in the past and it worked but it's time for change. And with change comes growth. We plan on having lots of items at the farm stand starting next spring with all the add-on's we have on our list. We hope this winter is a start to a new beginning and we hope you will follow along as we grow.
